> Duke Nukem Forever demo
Posted by Venomous Woe - 09-3-10 16:29 - 8 comments
Well, it looks like pigs just flew overhead, because a Duke Nukem Forever demo was shown at PAX this year.

Time to Kick Ass and Chew Bubblegum

Invader300 in the comments section thinks that DNF's driving on I-17 Halo, and I agree with him (or her), because the footage shows what looks like limited weapons, what might be regenerating health, and what most definitely is a vehicle. Oh, and that desert environment is extremely large and open, like quite a few of Halo's levels, as opposed to the smaller environments encountered in my first and only experience with DN in the Duke Nukem 3D demo.

Well, what do you guys think?

The price of Xbox Live Gold is going to increase! I mean yeah any sensible person knows to wait to buy the cards while they are on sale at some online retailer for $30 but still.

> Used Games - Free Market vs Progress?
Posted by Peachy Toadstool - 08-27-10 09:26 - 1 comments
Not sure who here follows Penny Arcade, but on Wednesday they released a comic on the topic of used games.

This was a topical response to THQ's latest comments on the issue. Feel free to read up on PA's comments on the thought here, followed by highlights from the hundreds of emails and twitters and facebookies that were lobbed their way just within hours of the update. Something commented on in today's comic, quoted below:

QUOTE (Tycho)
It turns out that used games are a tremendously controversial issue. Part of the reason response to the comic and post has been so massive is that (aside from our inflammatory presentation) this conversation has been a long time coming...

...People who buy used games are not pirates, by definition. Used games (used everything, really) are and will continue to be a legal and protected form of commerce. Other industries have done what they can to co-opt, destroy, or harvest those markets, but their existence is settled law. What I have said is that the end result of that purchase from a developer perspective must be indistinguishable. Isn't it? That is the question I couldn't answer. I still can't answer it. And because I couldn't, I had to change the way I invested my leisure dollar.

People want to talk about used cars, or libraries, or any other thing really, but I'm not talking about the universe in general - I'm talking about the tiny part of it I have any control over. That bit up there is the part I can't resolve: the moral dimension contained within the purchase. Yes, I'm giving somebody money when I buy used. Is that sufficient? What is the end result, and what systems am I sustaining by doing so?

I sort of agree with the general 'opt out' statement that this is a truly complex issue and money is going somewhere which means in some grand economic sense the system is working. However, I think I can see both sides of the argument.

It is expensive to make a game. Dead Space registered approximately a third the sales as the number of people who logged into their XBoxes and reflected playing it. To the developers, this was a frightening thought that they aren't getting paid nearly what they should be and if people are somehow playing the game without giving them money, it would be impossible to stay in business.

However, it's also expensive to buy games. When we, as gamers see a $60 price tag for a sequel to a game we already have, some of us have reservations. Especially when within a month we can save $5, and if we're lucky soon we can save even up to half the cost. If to the consumer, Assassin's Creed 5 isn't appealing under a $60 label, does it make the consumer a jerk to wait until it's worth something to them? I feel to some degree it's a fault of developers who will crank out a lack-luster, poorly reviewed Sonic Game that disappoints their fans and still expect to sell millions of copies at full price.

There is an increase of digital media (which can't be purchased used) as well as "Minis" and the like that are selling well ranged from $5-15. Maybe the $60 gem should be few and far between while we buy our crappy little Megaman expansions when we're in the mood for that retro feel.

When a developer pours their hearts and wallets into a project that is not only a work of art but a timeless source of entertainment I would love to see them receive every dollar they have coming to them. But if it costs too much to produce something and make a profit at reasonable prices, the market will of course hurt from it.

I touched on this with the use of illegal workers. Some argue that companies like Ford or whatever can't stay afloat without the cheap labor. To me, that's a sign that Ford is wasting a lot of money and can't make a car that people can pay for in the first place. If they don't have the resources to produce a product, taking it out on the costumers isn't the right course of action. That's not how the free market works.

tl/dr yet? No? Then let's hear your take on the subject.

P.S.: Note that I did in fact, ramble. And did not clearly take a side. Or did I? i dunno lol bbq

> Official Chozo Sanctuary Roast
Posted by CONKERSBADFURDAY - 08-26-10 22:34 - 13 comments
Alright, as you know, I proposed that idea here. A nice handful of you guys seemed interested in the idea, and so here is the fruition of that idea.

THE OFFICIAL CHOZO SANCTUARY ROAST

So. Here is how this is gonna work. We don't have an official "roastee" for this because I don't feel like picking someone or having a vote. This is going to be a free for all of sorts, kind of similar to the Comedy Central Roasts only without a designated person in the "hot seat." In this case, anyone on Chozo Sanctuary is eligible to be made fun of in a jovial manner.

Pick whoever you want and as many people as you want.

Don't want to get made fun of? Tough shit. If you haven't developed thick skin now, then get the fuck off the Internet.

I don't care how you format your posts, if you want to section it off or what. This is going to be pretty informal.

However, I do have a few guidelines I'd like any participants to follow.

1) Try and be funny. You might hate someone on this site, that's fine, I don't care. But if you're going to make fun of him MAKE IT FUNNY! That's the point of this. To laugh (at each other and ourselves.) Think X member is a faggot? Cool. But set that up so it's funny and not just blatantly offensive.

Basically, you can be an asshole, just be classy about it.

2) Don't go overboard on length. I'm not going to set up any strict limits, but use common sense. Don't spend pages of text on a specific person, that's not cool and odds are you'd have ran out of jokes long ago.

3) You have ONE post for roasting, two if you go over the post limit on the first one. I don't want to see someone post their giant jokefest, get burned by someone they didn't mention, then make another giant jokefest post. No retaliation like that. After your one roast-post you become an observer. You can post as many "good job" posts as you want, but that's it.

This means hit as many people as you want to or can right away. You only get one shot.

4) Don't turn this into a flame fest. I know that sounds counter productive since were going to be making fun of each other, so don't take things too personal. It's supposed to be FUN and FUNNY. Ya get burned real bad? Laugh it off and forget about it (or return the favor if you haven't posted yet). Don't start getting into some high school bitchy catfight. That's not cool.

5) No NSFW pictures. I'd prefer no pictures, but they can really add to a post, so I'll allow them. But keep them safe for work (Chozo Sanctuary rules here) and don't make them too big.

6) There is no rule on content or language. I don't care how offensive you get and anyone participating should feel the same. Remember, you can be offensive if everyone is laughing. At least most of the comedians I see on T.V. get away with their bullshit because the crowd is rolling in laughter.

So. That's all I have for rules. I'll even TL/DR it. Use common sense, try and be funny, ya get one roast-post, don't get offended, keep the pictures clean, and I don't give a flying fuck how filthy your typing gets.

I'll hopefully have something up by Saturday night. Everyone on the site is free to start whenever they want.

> Gamer attributes IRL!
Posted by CONKERSBADFURDAY - 08-26-10 20:20 - 6 comments
I'm pretty sure I've seen topics like this discussed before on the Internet (probably kotaku), but I never thought something like this would be said to me.

See, us gamers, we have a nice set of attributes (and some shitty ones like being a Morgil or not showering). Were persistent! Racist! Achievers when there are points involved! We are some kickass people.

So I'm at work making some spreadsheet things with Excel. Excel is a fuckawful program. I'm trying to put in some dates and it's not letting me formatting it in the way I want to. "Sept 12" becomes "12-Sep" That's not cool. That's lame.

So I'm trying to get it to work the way I want it to, and like ten minutes pass. This is when I start to rage out loud. So my boss comes on over and he goes "you know, I don't care what format it's in as long as the month and day are there."

And I go "I'm not letting it win. I'll figure it out"

He goes, "well you are one of those gamers. Let's try and figure it out"

And so we mess with it and figure it out and I'm like "WOOT WE WON" and he laughs and goes back to whatever it is he does.

And that's when I started thinking about this. I mean, it's pretty obvious I'm a gamer (I don't smell) because I have a lot of gamer Tshirts. Where I work doesn't have a dress code, it's a library at a University. Fuck, I was wearing a Link Tshirt!

So yeah. I mean, there are things about us people that play video games that make us attractive for work. SOLVING PUZZLES, MAKING SHIT WORK, NEVER GIVING UP, QUOTING STAR WARS

We can do it.

Because we are awesome.
