If someone calls you on the phone and you currently have a controller in your hand during a cutscene and someone asks "What are you doing," the answer you will give (if you don't lie) is "Playing a game." Cutscenes are part of the game, even if you don't push any buttons during them. You're still being entertained by the game. What's the fucking difference if you have full control of the camera while an NPC speaks to you to drive the narrative? Hardly anything at all.

They are a part of the game (so are menus and credit sequences), but they are not gameplay. By definition gameplay requires user input to yeild an output. That aspect of a game, the real user-driven gameplay is literally the reason why games exist, not canned cutscenes. Thus I feel that it is perfectly reasonable to only want the gameplay portion of a game, as that's the entire point of the medium. And when you consider that generally speaking cutscenes are completely unnecessary for enjoying that key component of a game, and that it's entirely possible that excessive and/or badly done (at least by the opinion of player) cutscenes will detract from the experience for a gameplay driven gamer, it can only be a bad thing that the developer forces the player to watch the cutscenes. Because for players who don't like them you're just breaking up their experience with something unenjoyable and for players who do like them, they won't be skipping them anyway, so they're completely unaffected.

The option to skip cutscenes isn't so bad (the Last Story I believe has that, though it simply does a fast forward as long as you hold the A button), although I personally don't see why people don't watch them through at least once. I'm pro gameplay more than anything but I also enjoy the context of things that the story grants within the game itself if it's a story heavy game. But that's a preference thing and for that reason the option to skip cutscenes might as well be a staple for those who don't share that preference.

I'll watch cutscenes if the story is good. If it's not (IE, this game apparently...or even bayonetta it's not neccessary and there's no explaining the crazy shit anyway) then I'll skip it.

I mean, why on earth would I want to watch the cutscenes in Dark Messiah? The game's story is complete trash, but the gameplay is super fun! It's not like I'm playing Killer7 or some RPG here.
