Today Legendary Pictures and The Pokémon Company have announced that Legendary Pictures have acquired the movie rights based on the Pokémon franchise and the first picture that's in the works will be a Detective Pikachu movie.

There is no word if this deal will affect future anime movies from TPC.  Legendary Pictures is best known for several super-hero movies including The Dark Knight and attempted blockbusters like Pacific Rim.

After Pokémon Go-mania heated up talks for Pokémon film rights, Legendary Pictures has announced it has won the bidding war and will be launching a live-action Pokémon film franchise, starting with a film based on "Detective Pikachu". The film is planned to begin production next year, and will be distributed by Universal Studios internationally and Toho in Japan.

Literally a 2 second difference, lol. Would have been first, but I waited to post to look for older Detective Pikachu topics to link, and then search took too long to load and I decided not to. :P

There were older threads.  I debated on whether if to bump the Detective Pikachu game thread, but I decided not to as I thought you would probably make a new thread anyways or split whatever I could have posted in there into a new topic.  There was also your original thread speaking about the Hollywood bidding "war" on the Pokemon movie rights, but I opted to not post in there either.

@movie I really don't like that this is a Detective Pikachu movie. I want my live action badass Pokémon adventure Trilogy that knocks other movie trilogies on their asses. Instead, we get a spin-off of a spin-off; yo dawg. At least now hopefully they can get Danny Devito to voice Pikachu; otherwise, fuck this shit.

Looks like this may end up being written by Alex Hirsch, creator of Gravity Falls, and Nicole Perlman, co-writer of Guardians of the Galaxy. Pretty great team.

So it seems the guy who directed Shark Tale, Monsters vs Aliens, and that recent Goosebumps movie will be directing this.

The Detective Pikachu movie is set to start shooting in London sometime in January 2018.

Goosebumps director Rob Letterman will be at the helm, using a script from Nicole Perlman (Captain Marvel) and Alex Hirsch (Galaxy Falls). It's going to be a live-action adventure with some CG interspersed...
