From the investors meeting...

We plan to release a smart-device application from the Mario Kart franchise, Mario Kart Tour, during the next financial year (from April 2018 to March 2019). We will announce further details at a later date.

It's too early to say, but what do you all think?  Maybe a demo to get people to spring over to Mario Kart 8 DX?  Or will this be just a game app to connect with the eventual Mario Kart 9 eliminating the "Mario Kart Channel" from MK Wii and MK 7?

I'm keeping hopes up a bit that next Spring is the release of MK 9. Don't disappoint me, Nintendo!

As for the app, I can't imagine what they'd put in there. I assume it'll be some woodered-down tie-in to MK, and not an actual racing game. But maybe I'm wrong, and they'll pull a Super Mario Run with it. If it's just a tie-in to the actual game, I'd think it would fit more in their Nintendo Switch app like what they have for Splatoon 2, and not be its own full-fledged app.

I hope this is an AR racing game where you play while driving your car and only functions when you're driving over the local speed limit.

It has been mentioned that Tour will be "free-to-start".  So you only will be able to play until a certain point and then you have to buy the game to play the rest of it.

While it's the best option for consumers, I'm surprised they're doing this again after Super Mario Run. It's been proven to be the least financially viable monetization system, as it's a single purchase and people are substantially less likely to buy a game after playing a demo (particularly on mobile). I guess the massive success of FE: Gacha hasn't entirely turned them to the dark side just yet.
