Super Smash Bros. Melee is the second in the Super Smash Bros. series which was released for the Nintendo GameCube and it continues to be played even to this day by die-hard fans of the series.  It was considered to be the pinnacle of fighting games due to the wide variety of fighting options the meta-game has that no other fighter has even come close to touching.


Of course Melee isn't without controversy thanks to both the Melee community and the communities of other Smash games and at large.  Melee is considered to be a perfect tournament fighter and said community has taken flak for looking down at the communities of other Smash games and at large due to the amount of skill you will need to fight well in this game.


This has led Sakurai admitting Melee is too hardcore to draw in casuals leading him to redoing Smash's mechanics from scratch for both Brawl (prompted easier, floating gameplay) and 4 (gameplay is more geared to Melee, but keeping some of Brawl's balances for casuals).


Anyways even today there are things continuously being found in Melee whether it be new tricks to even more unused data!



Time mines were found in Melee.  They would work the same as time mines in the N64 Goldeneye -- throw one on the ground/people and it will automatically explode after a number of seconds.  There is no official word on why these mines didn't make it into the game, but it could be it was redundant in addition to copyright woes.


Originally the Motion-Sensor Mine were Proximity Mines from N64 Goldeneye before they were renamed and remodeled due to copyright concerns.  Perhaps Sakurai found the timed version of mines would be redundant due to the Bob-omb item?  Who knows.

- created at MIT by the CSAIL team
- the team trained a neural network to fight by handing it the coordinates of game objects
- they also gave the AI incentives to play in ways that should secure a win
- the AI is good enough to usually prevail over players ranked in the top 100 worldwide

I just found these two badass videos. Obviously these are hacks (#morgilinbound), but it's still awesome to behold.
