Ah the Super Mario franchise all about a pair of brothers who not only defend the Mushroom Kingdom, but save the world over and over from bad guys of various ilk including Bowser, King of all Koopas.  Before the lore was changed to match NCL's lore, originally Nintendo of America had it so that Mario and Luigi were plumbers from Brooklyn before they found a warp zone to the Mushroom World and the seven Koopalings (before Bowser Jr.) were Bowser's children.  For so long we were just running with the localization NoA did for the Mario games.  As the mid-90's rolled around, we saw the end of NoA's localization lore of Mario games as they adopted NCL's Mario lore.

Gone was Princess Toadstool, now just known as Princess Peach.  Mario and Luigi are Mushroom World natives even though they are human.  Bowser Jr. became Bowser's only child and the 7 Koopalings became just Bowser's henchmen.  Mario and Luigi no longer just do odd jobs, they help defend against evil, poor health, and enjoy some sports on occasion.  Well today, NCL just put out more lore that will be the standard going forward.

NCL now says the days of Mario and Luigi plumbing are long gone (never mind the Super Mario World 3D reference).

And now for a what could have been:

Camelot tried to give Wario and Waluigi their significant others like Mario has Peach and Luigi has Daisy.  Shigeru Miyamoto shot down that idea.

So yeah what do you think about the Mario lore (even though it's a loose lore)?  Should Wario and Waluigi get girlfriends of their own?  What do you all think?

Based on how that's worded, it sounds like the plumber angle for Mario and Luigi is still canon as part of their backstory, but just that they no longer actively practice that profession any more these days.
