Splatoon 2 Splatfests

06 August 2017 - 09:10 AM

Yo yo, fresh inklings, now that Splatoon 2 is out and Splatfests have started, I thought it'd be a good idea to have a separate Splatfest thread so we can keep the post-release Splatoon 2 thread more for info and announcements.

So post all Splatfest-related things in this thread. As a matter of introduction, we just got done with the first official Splatfest, Mayo vs. Ketchup, in which Mayo one.

Who knows what the next one will be, but we can discuss it here when it happens!

Nintendo Summer of Play 2017 mall tour

29 June 2017 - 12:05 PM

Not sure if anyone really cares, but because I have a picture and some impressions, here's some info about this summer's Nintendo mall tour that we went to last weekend. (Full list of the remaining dates and malls here - link might not work in years to come, since it's just going to a generic events page)

First off, a warped panoramic of what was set up at the Mall of America. They got the big spot, the same one that they had the big Mario Kart 8 tournament at a few years ago that I posted about somewhere else (maybe in my Poohblog?), but there were no tournament-type things going on with the big screen this time around.

2017%20Summer%20of%20Play.JPG

Picture taken at about 5 PM, the whole thing started at 11:00. Crowds had thinned a bit, and all the aluminum bottles were claimed. :O

They actually had the whole area roped off this time, unlike previous tours where people were just milling around randomly. Of course, those times were for Wii U things, so the turnout was lower. ;) We waited in the pre-line for less than 5 minutes before gaining entrance to the wonderland behind the ropes.

They had sections for MK8 DX, ARMS, Splatoon, and Pokken, and then an area for 3DS games, 1-2-Switch, and Bomberman, with Snipperclips and BotW tucked away on the far side of the picture.

Upon entering, you get a card with 8 places for stamps. They wanted you to play a session of ARMS, Mario Kart 8, Splatoon, and Pokken, and then the other 4 were just playing anything else (like 1-2-Switch and 3DS stuff). One guy gave us extra stamps because we were so cool, so we got our cards filled up pretty quickly. Then you took those to the area in the middle to get some random stuff, and if you showed them your Nintendo Account QR code, you got one of those fairly nice aluminum bottles they were giving away to members.

Sam and I wandered around, while Yabo and Torgina mostly attacked on their own. ARMS we got to play against each other, and did about as well as you'd expect for it being a new game. :)

Then we tried Pokken, and spent the entire match button-mashing and not knowing exactly what was going on. I think Sam let me win, as a nod to my status as his elder who kept ranting about the gol-durn pokie-mans not doing what he wanted them to do.

After that, we hit up Mario Kart 8. We did local wireless with that one, and raced against a couple of other kids. It was kind of unfair since they did team match, and Sam and I ended up on the same team. With only 4 racers and us on the same team, we cleaned up pretty well.

And finally, the longest line was for Splatoon. I think that one took close to 20 minutes to get through and wait. They actually had two lines, one for regular Turf War, and one off to the side for Salmon Run. They had two setups, one for each team, as can be seen in the picture, and they were doing spectator mode on the big screen near the back.

Also by that bigger TV was where Salmon Run was going on, which is what we stood in line for. Salmon Run was really fun, and does really benefit from actually being able to talk while you play. They had a rep playing one of the spots, and then 3 people in the other ones. I got set up with a couple of kids, and while they did their jobs pretty well to move golden eggs back to the net, we clearly won our run because of my sniping skills. :)

We only played at 5%, and it seemed pretty easy for people who know what they're doing, but I bet it's easy to get overwhelmed as the difficulty level goes up.

The only real "complaint" I'd say would be that there wasn't as much free stuff. :) Previously, as you walked around they'd be handing out like stickers and hats and shoelaces and stuff. But now it was all locked behind the "spin the random wheel once and see what you get" gate. But they put on a good show, and had a good turnout. This is the biggest mall tour setup I've seen in about the last 3 or 4 years, so I don't think they've heard Plant's tea-leaf readings that Switch is dad.

Sam has some other pictures, and a video I think. Maybe he'll post them here if we all ask nicely. :D

Super NES Classic Edition

26 June 2017 - 08:24 AM

Nintendo has announced the Super NES Classic Edition, releasing September 29, 2017.

It includes the following games, and two controllers (hopefully with cords longer than 2 feet):

  • Contra III: The Alien Wars™
  • Donkey Kong Country™
  • EarthBound™
  • Final Fantasy III
  • F-ZERO™
  • Kirby™ Super Star
  • Kirby’s Dream Course™
  • The Legend of Zelda™: A Link to the Past™
  • Mega Man® X
  • Secret of Mana
  • Star Fox™
  • Star Fox™ 2
  • Street Fighter® II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
  • Super Castlevania IV™
  • Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts®
  • Super Mario Kart™
  • Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars™
  • Super Mario World™
  • Super Metroid™
  • Super Punch-Out!! ™
  • Yoshi’s Island™

Yes, you read that right, Star Fox 2 is on there (apparently have you to beat the first level of Star Fox to unlock it).

MSRP will be $79.99, not much else in the way of info released other than that yet.

Will they make more than 12 of them? Will it be another, "Oh, this was just a holiday thing that we didn't realize people would want!" situation? We can only hope Nintendo learned from their NES Classic folly, especially now that Switch is already out and going strong.

Metroid: Samus Returns for Nintendo 3DS Pre-Release Thread

13 June 2017 - 10:08 AM

MetroidSamusReturns.jpg

Metroid: Samus Returns has been announced for Nintendo 3DS. A re-imaging of Metroid II: Return of Samus, it's a 2D-ish Metroid game that takes its design ideas from the past Metroid Prime games, as well as Other M. Despite what Plant said, it doesn't appear to have Fed Force in its lineage. :P

Also announced were new amiibo, including a squishy-fun Metroid one that we all need:

Kotaku has a good writeup about some gameplay details that I won't repeat here. Plenty of info can be found elsewhere, too.

A special edition that includes a soundtrack has also been announced.

Metroid: Samus Returns is scheduled to release on September 15, 2017. It's a glorious time to be alive! Share your hype here!

Metroid Prime 4 has finally been announced for Nintendo Switch, after being absent entirely on Wii U. No other information has been released at this time, just that it's in development.

Here's Nintendo's official fact sheet, as slim as it is:
