Topics I've Started

Hey! Pikmin for 3DS

13 April 2017 - 06:33 AM

Guess I'll start the soon-to-be-hot topic about Hey! Pikmin, which was announced for 3DS during yesterday's direct, releasing July 28th, 2017.

As for my take, I want to be excited about it, but after seeing what they did to Chibi Robo in Hey! Chibi ... er, Chibi Robo Zip Lash, I can't shake the feeling that turning Pikmin into a platformer is a bad idea. I guess we'll see how it turns out, maybe it's being done by a different developer that won't make clearing a world partly reliant on RNG to decide which area you're going to.

Of note, Hey! Pikmin doesn't support 3D on the 3DS. Does this mark a move away from the 3D gimmick that the 3DS was born for? Or is it just because they're using both screens to simulate one tall screen? Or does it foretell the coming of the apocalypse, wherein we all cry our lamentations?

Thoughts? Comments? Wise remarks?

No Arms thread yet? It's almost like nobody's actually interested in it.

Admittedly, I don't even know if I am, but Splatoon taught me to not count anything out when it comes to weird new IPs from Nintendo. I also wanna know what these people look like when they're not fighting. Do they attach normal arms, or are they all dangly all the time?

Here's the event trailer for historical reasons. Anyone have any thoughts on this one way or the other? I'd like to see this come with a set of JoyCons, since you need two full sets to play local 2-player (unless one person has a Pro Controller), but we all know that won't happen.

After 3 years of tears and hardship, Nintendo has given us another way to send 3D drawings and messages to our friends! Swapdoodle is available now for free!

Sounds like there's extra features you can pay for, but the app itself is free. Let us return to greatness, until some other Japanese businessmen lure underage girls to a hotel room with it.

Nintendo UK has posted a list of all the for-pay upgrades, and there's a lot of them. See them all here: http://www.nintendo....#Add_On_Content

DF Retro does Metroid Prime

31 October 2016 - 01:17 PM

Not sure if it's amazing, but Digital Foundry Retro did a video on Metroid Prime. Particularly interesting (to me at least) is the wireframe parts, showing just how much the GCN was pushing, and how much work Retro did to keep it at 60 FPS. Worth a watch.

Super Mario 64 developer interview from 1996

23 September 2016 - 07:42 AM

Schmuplations has an interview from 1996 that's been translated, talking with Miyamoto and others on the SM64 team about developing this new game, both on the technical side and the game-design side.

Interesting to read, and find out how Miyamoto wanted to promote cruelty to rabbits, monkeys being jerks, and he thought his own child had no brains.
